Welcome!

Welcome to our website! The congregation and I have a unique relationship. I am their Pastoral Care Minister, my sole responsibility being care and comfort of the congregation and its leaders. I fill the pulpit on the 4th Sunday of each month. I love it all!

Ironically, the stained glass window of Jesus surrounded by sheep is the same image that was front and center in the Presbyterian Church of my childhood. Each time I see it I am reminded that the religious journey is always evolving, nourished by experiences, life, learning, and others who think and believe differently. It is also a reminder to be open to spiritual growth.

I invite you to click on our Seven Principles, Avowal of Faith, and Our Living Tradition. These are what we hold in common…the bedrock of our believing. Too often we are described as “Moonies” (not true!), heretics, and/or a religion in which “you can believe anything you want.” I hope that in reading these documents, you can see that our principles limit our congregation to those who embrace them.
I have always believed that being a Unitarian Universalist is hard. Living our Principles is a tremendous challenge. How many of us can TRULY “affirm the inherent worth and dignity ofevery person??! We are a liberal religious community comprised of people who each think and believe differently. Politically, we run the spectrum. Living together, even as we disagree, is not easy. Yet we believe that now, more than ever, it is vital that we learn how to navigate our differences AND NOT TAKE OUR MARBLES AND GO HOME! We aim to show a world that seems unable to respect differences that it possible to live in peace together. Again, not easy.

We are a people who tell stories of our spiritual journeys. We do not believe in telling others what their conscience, hearts and minds should believe; rather, we offer encouragement and nourishment for YOUR journey. We learn from one another – a great advantage of having differences! We worship on Sunday mornings, tapping into the wisdom of many religions, sages, and insightful human beings. Revelation is not sealed, in our book. Not everyone is fed every Sunday. We are too diverse for that to be possible; however, we each are fed by being a worship community, by being in relationship with one another. And we know that soon, our turn will come.

It is perhaps easier to understand us if you know that our lives are our scripture. We live what we believe. Hence, it is often said, “If you want to know what I believe, watch me.” With James (in the Second Testament of the Christian Bible), we practice deeds, not creeds. We also have lots of fun together.

If you are curious and have questions, feel free to come and ask, call me (207-426-2963), or e-mail me at: kallan@uuma.org. Or you may contact our President, Martha Pfirman, at: pfirmanm@verizon.net.

Blessed Be,
Rev. Kathleen Allan (“Kathleen” please!)
